Middle School

Lighthouse Christian Middle School is a discipleship school, committed to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and vocational development of students. The purpose of the school is to provide a Biblically-integrated instructional program in a disciplined environment that encourages spiritual commitment and academic excellence. LCS students consistently receive a Biblically-integrated education in the core classes of mathematics, English, science, history, physical education, and Bible, as well as a variety of electives, balancing affect and academic goals and priorities to insure that the school day is a blend of opportunities to develop students’ minds, hearts, dispositions, talents, and bodies.

Lighthouse is accredited through the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NWAC), the State of Idaho, and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).

6th Grade

Bible: Sixth grade Bible is an inductive study of the Gospel of Matthew and the Epistle of James. Emphasis is placed on personal application of Biblical principles to life. Additionally, students memorize Matthew chapter 5 and James chapter 1.

Math: Saxon Math 7/6 is used as the primary sixth grade text. This curriculum is designed to give students a foundational understanding of basic mathematics relating to fractions, decimals, percentages, and whole numbers. Students are encouraged to learn to think mathematically and to apply math principles to real-life problems.

Science: Sixth grade science is based on Purposeful Designs Choices. There are five distinct units: 1. Wonders of Creation: The Weather; 2. Health & Hygiene; 3. Earth Science; 4. Gods Great Universe & Exploring Space; and 5. Observing Invertebrates. Hands-on, Inductive learning is encouraged as students learn to solve problems, think critically, and work collaboratively.

History: Sixth graders explore New World History and Geography from a Christian perspective. Major units of study include Canada, United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. This course is a major overview of the land, resources, history, and governments of the Western Hemisphere. Projects include: Canadian Travel Brochures, Colony Research Paper, and a Central or South American country report.

English: The sixth grade English curriculum (BK English) focuses on grammar, usage, mechanics, and composition. Students also participate in literature studies. The sixth grade class novels include: The Hobbit, A Christmas Carol, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM, and My Side of the Mountain.

7th Grade

Bible: During 7th grade, students explore a survey of the Old Testament using Route 66. This study is designed to introduce students to the major characters, themes, and events of the Old Testament with an emphasis on Gods power and activity and personal application.

Math: In middle school, students explore pre-algebra over a 2 year course of study beginning in seventh grade. The goal is to lay a solid foundation for success in high school mathematics. Using Saxon Algebra 1/2 students are introduced to basic algebraic concepts, such as prime and composite numbers, fractions, decimals, order of operations, coordinates, exponents, square roots, ratios, algebraic phrases, probability, the Pythagorean Theorem and more. Students also gain an understanding of algebra through a program called Hands-on Equations, which is a physical/concrete method for learning about algebraic equations.

Science: Seventh grade science is based on A Beka Science: Order and Reality. There are six distinct units, which are all taught from a Biblical perspective: 1. Introduction to Science & the Scientific Method; 2. Plants: Provision for Life; 3. Your Wonderful Body; 4. The Science of Classification; 5. Through the Microscope; and 6. Introduction to Physical Science. Students are involved in hands-on learning that encourages application of the scientific method.

History: Seventh graders take an exciting journey through the major cultures and events of World History. Using A Beka History of the World in Christian Perspective, students learn about the fascinating history of the Ancient Middle East, Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, and the Modern Age. An emphasis is placed on Gods activity throughout world history.

English: The seventh grade English curriculum (BK English) focuses on grammar, usage, mechanics, and composition. Students also participate in literature studies. During seventh grade, students read The Watsons go to Birmingham, Where the Red Fern Grows, Across Five Aprils, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

8th Grade

Bible: During 8th grade, students explore a survey of the New Testament using Route 66. This study is designed to introduce students to the major characters, themes, and events of the New Testament with an emphasis on Gods power and activity and personal application. Students are encouraged to develop a personal relationship with Christ that is demonstrated in authentic Christian living. Projects include an in-depth study into one book of the New Testament as well as a study of the book, The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel.

Math: 8th Grade Algebra 1/2 is the second half of a two-year course of study in Pre-Algebra. The goal is to lay a solid foundation for success in high school mathematics. After reviewing the concepts learned in 7th grade, students go on to refine and solidify their skills in basic algebra, geometry, binomials, polynomials, graphing, slope, and intercept of lines, and more.

Science: 8th grade science is based on A Bekas Science of the Physical Creation. There are five distinct units, which are all taught from a Biblical perspective: 1. Earths Atmosphere, Weather, and Oceans; 2. Geology; 3. Physical Science (Focus on waves, magnetism and electricity); 4. Creation Science; 5. Nutrition and Exercise. Students are involved in hands-on learning that encourages scientific reasoning, Biblical worldview, and application of the scientific method.

History: 8th Grade History is an overview examination of United States history. Using A Beka America: Land I Love, students will be introduced to the key people, periods, and events of American history from the time of the explorers to the 21st century. Emphasis is placed on the Godly heritage of our country both in its founding and history. Students also review A Beka Western Hemishpere Geography Studies and Projects.

English: The 8th grade English curriculum (BK English) focuses on grammar, usage, mechanics, and composition. Students also participate in literature studies. During sixth grade, students read The Chosen, Number the Stars, Night, and I Am David.
